Behind the Code: The Making of Bubble Smasher
Bubble Smasher combines nostalgia with modern interactive features. Thus, it makes an ideal addition to the QBIX platform and a hit with a diverse audience. Lucian, our developer, shared his thoughts about the initial stage of development:
The main reason I started working on Bubble Smasher was that I strongly believe such retro-style games can be reinterpreted and recreated to work inside QBIX. The initial goal was to create a proof of concept and show that indeed it can work, after which the goal exploded into a full-fledged game experience.”
In discussing the vision behind Bubble Smasher, our lead developer emphasized his goal to create a nostalgic experience while ensuring the game aligns with the QBIX core principles:
I wanted to cultivate a nostalgic emotion so that when players try the game for the first time, they’ll think ‘Oh, it’s that old game… what was its name?’. Also, I wanted to make it enjoyable for both single and two-player sessions. Additionally, I aimed to encourage movement and fully utilize the vibrating floor that QBIX provides.”
Core Principles and Gameplay
QBIX games are built on principles that resonate globally: social interaction, universally appealing themes, interactive, active and multiplayer gameplay. These elements not only make the games fun and engaging but also highly replayable.
However, adapting a classic concept into an immersive and fun experience is no joke. We asked our colleague about the key challenges he faced while adapting the game for the QBIX platform, and he shared:
Firstly in the original retro game, you use a keyboard to interact with it whereas in QBIX you physically hold a controller. Secondly, making people move can be more challenging than it seems, as some players tend to stay in one place. To address this, I created early levels that make them navigate through the gaming room to continue progressing.”
